Cognitivism (as a Pedagogical Philosophy) focuses on how the mind processes and uses information. Within cognitivism, tasks are analyzed and then broken down into smaller steps and/or chunks. Information is then taught from the most simple to the most complex based on the learner's prior knowledge. Cognitive learners use schema or mental maps to help organize information and tie the material to existing knowledge to aid memorization. This method pays attention to the learner's specific differences by accommodating and approaching information in various ways. Psychologists of Cognitivism have challenged the limitations of Behaviorism in terms of observable behavior.
Some Important Cognitivism Theorists:
Jean Piaget - Theorized that children progress through stages in the Theory of Cognitive Development.
John R. Anderson - Developed the two types of memory known as Procedural and Declarative.
Piaget's Theory of Cognitive Development (1970) identified four major stages in which children progress: sensorimotor, pre-operational, concrete operational and formal operational. This theory suggests that these stages reflect differences in a child's cognitive abilities and that learners cannot be taught key cognitive tasks unless they have reached a particular stage of cognitive development. Great job, Iris! I made a few changes. I enlarged the picture, changed some formatting and sentences, added a link, and changed the references. I believe that italics are only used for titles, books, and names that are part of a title. I would like to make the references indented on the second line of each, but I can't figure out how to do that. Maybe the 2nd editor can help us with that!

I'm com'in in for the kill tomorrow, but, sadly, I don't see anything to change. Remember, the primary author was Iris and she's the perfect twin. Not much to do to her beautiful work. I'll add to the cite, perhaps resize the image (it's falling off the page) and look a little deeper for stuff. Thanks, girls. Great team! Maria

All I did was fit the image to the window and give it a left-alignment. The right side was not visible to the user. Additionally, I worked a bit on the references. Some of the names were in italics and not in last name/first initial order. I added Gange's first initial and put some others in correct APA format. I hope it is all O.K.
