Digital Storytelling and Photo –journaling to Promote Literacy

 Pictures to Motion to Excellent  Digital Storytelling

Introduction

Digital storytelling is a way to tell stories using computer technology, which is a powerful tool for teaching and learning that helps both teachers, by advancing their educational goals in the classroom, and students, by developing their analytical and communication skills, as well as their computer technology skills. Digital storytelling is a base for those who are interested in knowing how multimedia could be integrated into many different educational activities.

Digital Storytelling using Multimedia

What is a Digital Storytelling?

 The Digital storytelling process starts with choosing a topic, writing a script and creating a story by using multimedia, which includes computer-based graphics, recorded audio narration, text, video clips, and music. After the Digital Story is created, it can then be uploaded on a web site, or burned onto a DVD (Table -1).

Digital Storytelling Literacy

A Digital storytelling topic can be based on any subject, which can help an individual to develop their creative literacy skills. Robin (2008) combined the research of many authors who wrote 21st Century Skills or Digital Age Literacy to develop the theory on Digital Storytelling literacy. She further divided this large topic into several different categories, which are listed below.

1)    Digital Literacy: The ability to communicate with an ever-expanding community to discuss issues, gather information, and seek help;

2)    Global Literacy: the capacity to read, interpret, respond, and contextualize messages from a global perspective

3)    Technology Literacy: the ability to use computers and other technology to improve learning, productivity, and performance;

4)    Visual Literacy: the ability to understand, produce, and communicate through visual images;

5)    Information Literacy: the ability to find, evaluate, and synthesize information

Gaining the above literacy skills is very important to an individual in order to develop analytical and communication skills by using the latest computer technology.

Historical Background of Digital Storytelling

Digital storytelling started in the 1990s when Joe Lambert and Dana Atchley created the idea of Digital Storytelling and started a non-profitable organization community center at Berkley called Center of Digital Storytelling (CDS), which provided services and training (Robin, 2008). At the Center of Digital Storytelling, 7 elements were designed as guidelines for how to develop a digital story.

Center for Digital Storytelling‘s Seven Elements by Joe Lambert at Berkley Center (Robin, 2008)

1. Point of view

What is the main point of the story and what is the perspective of the author?

2. A dramatic question

A key question that keeps the viewer’s attention and will be answered by the end of the story.

3. Emotional content

Serious issues that come alive in a personal and powerful way and connects the story to the audience.

4. The gift of your voice

A way to personalize the story to help the audience understand the context.

5. The power of the

Soundtrack

Music or other sounds that support and embellish the storyline.

6. Economy

Using just enough content to tell the story without overloading the viewer.

7. Pacing

The rhythm of the story and how slowly or quickly it progresses

(Robin 2008)

In conclusion, we can see that Digital storytelling is a very powerful tool for telling stories that help with communications, reading and writing literacy using the latest computer technology.
